India Bangladesh Relations: Amidst the worst ever relations between India and Bangladesh, Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus met India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, where he raised the issue of the statements of former Indian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Said that this is creating tension.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Environment Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, has said that Bangladesh has expressed its “discomfort” to India regarding the statements made by a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He said that the purpose of these statements is to create tension. Briefing reporters after the meeting between Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Dhaka, Syeda said, “We have clearly presented our stand on this issue.”
‘Media organizations are not responsible’
The environment advisor said that India reiterated its interest in further strengthening and taking forward relations with Bangladesh. Syeda said that the Indian delegation made it clear that the government of their country is not responsible for the activities of those media organizations or institutions which are spreading misleading information about Bangladesh. He also said that India has expressed its commitment to improve the process of issuing visas to Bangladeshis.
Said this regarding Agartala attack
Recently, India had expressed regret after Dhaka’s protest on the issue of attack on Bangladesh Mission in Agartala, Tripura. “Now that he has expressed his commitment to pursue bilateral relations with the interim government, we believe his earlier regrets are still relevant,” Syeda said.
He also said that there was no new discussion between India and Bangladesh on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. Syeda said that both sides emphasized their eagerness to strengthen bilateral relations. The Bangladesh government has described the role of SAARC and BIMSTEC as important in promoting regional cooperation. Syeda said that India kept a close watch on the incidents in Bangladesh during July and August and expressed its awareness.
Bangladesh had termed Sheikh Hasina’s statements as ‘hate speech’
A Bangladesh tribunal on Thursday (December 5) had banned the telecast of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “hate speech”. Bangladesh’s International Criminal Court (ICT) is investigating Sheikh Hasina on several charges, including “mass murder” during the August conflict. After which he was forced to leave the country and flee to the neighboring country India.
