Bangladesh Government Crisis: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country after weeks of violent student protests turned into unrest. According to reports, 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh by helicopter on Monday (August 5) and reached India. After this, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman addressed the nation in a press conference. The Army Chief said that the army will remain deployed until the situation becomes normal.
Bangladesh Army Chief General Wakar-uz-Zaman said that an interim government will be formed in the country. For this, he has also talked to different parties. During this, the Army Chief appealed to the people to maintain peace. Also, the Army Chief has assured justice for those who have died in the movement in Bangladesh. He said that the current situation has brought disrepute to Bangladesh in the world. In such a situation, an interim government will be formed in Bangladesh soon.
48-hour timeline for Sheikh Hasina’s arrival in India
- Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has left Bangladesh and reached India. During this time, Hasina has landed on a C-130 transport plane at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, adjacent to Delhi. According to sources, she has not asked for asylum here but she will stay in India for some time. After this she may leave for London. However, Britain has reportedly refused to accept the request for political asylum of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.
- The army has announced that Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport has been closed for the next six hours following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Local media has reported that the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has confirmed the announcement of the closure of the airport.
- After the military coup, Sheikh Hasina decided to resign from her post. It is being told that Bangladesh Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman had given an ultimatum to Sheikh Hasina to resign within 45 minutes. After resigning, Sheikh Hasina left the country in a special army helicopter.
