Bangladesh News: The interim government of Bangladesh has lifted the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Jamaat-e-Islami is the main Islamic party of Bangladesh, which is identified as religious fundamentalism. While lifting the ban on this party, the government said that no evidence has been found of Jamaat-e-Islami’s involvement in terrorist activities.
Sheikh Hasina’s government had imposed a ban
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had banned the Jamaat-e-Islami party under the anti-establishment law. The Jamaat-e-Islami party was accused of inciting violence during student-led protests in Bangladesh, which later turned into a rebellion against former PM Sheikh Hasina. The party has denied the allegations that it incited violence during the protests, in which students raised their voice against reservation for government jobs.
The Jamaat-e-Islami party was banned from contesting elections by the High Court there in the year 2013. After this, the party had to stay out of the elections held in 2014, 2018 and January this year. Sheikh Hasina’s government banned this party on August 1, 2024, four days after which she had to resign and leave Bangladesh due to student revolt.
Jamaat-e-Islami will go to Supreme Court regarding contesting elections
According to Al Jazeera’s report, Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyer Shishir Monir said that the party will file a petition in the Supreme Court next week for registration with the Bangladesh Election Commission so that it can contest the elections. Jamaat-e-Islami was founded in 1941 during British rule, which campaigned against the creation of Bangladesh as an independent state during the 1971 independence war from Pakistan.
After the coup in Bangladesh, miscreants attacked Hindus there, behind which the Jamaat-e-Islami party was said to be behind. However, Shafiqur Rahman of the Jamaat-e-Islami party has said that his party was not involved in the attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. According to the report of news agency PTI, he said that such things are being said to tarnish the image of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.
