Bangladesh Violence: The controversy over increasing violence and security against the Hindu community in Bangladesh has intensified. Shafiqul Alam, press secretary of the Mohammad Yunus government, claimed that Hindus are safer now compared to Sheikh Hasina’s rule. However, this claim seems to contradict the pictures and videos in which radicals can be seen attacking the Hindu community.
Shafiqul Alam, in an interview with India Today, accused the Indian media of running a “misinformation campaign”. He said that the Hindu community is safe in Bangladesh. According to him, the present situation is better than the reign of Sheikh Hasina. He claimed that “misinformation” originating from India had exaggerated the issue. However, Alam could not clarify that if Hindus are safe, then why people from the minority community have been protesting in recent times.
Increasing incidents of attacks on Hindus
After the fall of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina, attacks on the Hindu community have increased. Temples and religious places are being attacked. During this time a temple was targeted in Chittagong. There were attempts to attack three centers of ISKCON. The unrest has increased in recent days with the arrest of three Hindu priests. During this time, the Hindu community is protesting on the streets demanding attacks on temples and security.
Accusations on Sheikh Hasina government
Shafiqul Alam blamed Sheikh Hasina government for the violence against the Hindu community. He said that there were large-scale atrocities against Hindus during the rule of Sheikh Hasina. At that time, Indian and international media ignored these incidents. He also questioned the British Parliament and expatriate groups not raising the issue.
Security claims from the government
Shafikul Alam said that the government has taken steps for the safety of temples and minorities. “We are committed to ensuring the human rights of every citizen regardless of gender, ethnicity, race and colour,” he said.
