Bangladesh Protests erupt over tree felling: It has been almost 4 months since Sheikh Hasina was ousted in Bangladesh. After he left the country, the situation in the country has changed rapidly. The interim government of Mohammad Yunus may have taken over the reins of the country but it seems unable to overcome the challenges facing the country. In the past months, be it attacks against minorities in the country or building better relations with neighboring countries, the Yunus government has proved to be a laggard on many fronts. There was a time when Bangladesh’s GDP was among the fastest growing economies of the world.
Data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows that Bangladesh’s GDP growth in 2019 was 7.9 percent. Even when Corona was at its peak in the year 2020, Bangladesh recorded a GDP growth of 3.4 percent. In the recent budget, the Bangladesh government had set a target of increasing the GDP growth to 6.75 percent, but before this target could be achieved, the power of the country was captured by the government of Mohammad Yunus. Now the condition of the interim government has become so bad that even if a tree falls in the country, people come out on agitation and the government is ignoring them.
The tree fell and there was a movement
In fact, the construction work of Dhaka Elevated Expressway in Panthkunja Park area near Caravan Bazaar of Bangladesh has been strongly criticized by environmentalists and local people. People are worried about the cutting of trees and interference in green areas under this project. The protesting people also formed a human chain against the government.
There was no initiative for talks from the government
Protestors from the Gach Rokha movement (movement to save trees) demanded an immediate stop to the construction. He condemned the damage caused to Panthkunja Park and the adjacent Hatirjheel and requested the concerned authorities to give priority to environmental protection instead of urban development. People are angry about this matter that the government is not taking any care of them, nor has there been any kind of assurance or initiative for dialogue from the government after the movement.
