Bedana litchi fruit is oval or heart shaped. The farmers here are heavily dependent on litchi cultivation. Let’s know about the famous litchi of the state…
Talking about Shahi Litchi, it is the best type of litchi, which is mainly grown in Muzaffarpur. It is also cultivated in other areas of the country with this name, but the quality of Shahi Litchi of Muzaffarpur is excellent, for which it has also received GI tag. On the other hand, China Litchi is a late ripening variety which has dark red colour, medium sized fruits. The fruit has more pulp and each tree yields 80-90 kg. One of its specialties is that the fruit does not burst when ripe.
Kasba litchi is a mid-late ripening variety grown in Bihar. Its fruits are dark red in colour and are oval or round. This variety is resistant to cracking and sunburn. Longia litchi species of Muzaffarpur has become extinct. Till 25-30 years ago, Longia was also grown in the orchards along with Shahi and China litchi, but now it has disappeared.
Bihar’s pride, GI tagged Shahi Litchi, is famous for its taste in the country and abroad. Bihar’s share in the country’s total litchi production is more than 40 percent.
