Makhana, once known as a wild crop, is now counted in super food. Makhana is used for many other products including Ayurvedic medicine, snacks, starch. About one and a half lakh farmers of Bihar are connected with this super food cultivation. Only 80 to 90 percent of the total production of Makhana in the country is from Bihar. According to government data, Makhana was cultivated on about 35324 hectares of land in Bihar in the year 2022-23. The field of Makhana farming is continuously increasing. About 55 thousand farmers cultivate Makhana in the area of Kosi-Semanchal alone. The Bihar government has promoted Makhana farming in the last few years under the Horticulture Mission. After GI tagging, Bihar’s Makhana has become global and exports abroad are also being exported. However, due to middlemen, Makhana farmers used to have fair price problems. On Saturday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the General Budget in the Lok Sabha. During this time he announced the formation of Makhana Board. Due to which there is enthusiasm among Makhana farmers as well as experts.
