A big negligence was seen in Bettiah’s GMCH, where not one or two but seven women were delivered using a torch. The power supply in the hospital remained disrupted from 9 pm on Thursday to around 11 am on Friday i.e. for more than 13 hours. Even after this, neither the superintendent nor the hospital management paid any attention. Due to this, the patients and their families were completely troubled by the condition of the hospital. The patients and their families kept suffering from the heat due to power outage. The doctors and the health workers were also very restless due to the lack of electricity.

Seven women were killed by torchlight

Due to power outage, patients admitted in the ICU of GMCH and patients undergoing treatment in the 12-bed ICU ward kept chanting the name of God. Also, doctors and paramedical staff in the emergency ward had to treat patients in the light of torches. Not only this, seven women were delivered using torches. The doctor says that not a single case was of caesarean.

The family said that the hospital and the system are negligent

Hospital manager Mohammad Shahnawaz says that the hospital gets electricity supply directly from the grid. Due to technical fault in the grid, the electricity supply was disrupted, due to which the patients and their families faced a lot of trouble. However, electricity supply has started in the hospital from around 11 am on Friday. On the other hand, Shankar Kumar, son of Gayatri Devi (65), a patient from Gandhinagar of Bagaha, Seema Devi, a relative of Nathuni Sah (60) and Rizwana Khatoon, daughter of Mohammad Aslam (45), a patient from Bettiah Ujjain Tola, said that the electricity was off for several hours, this is the negligence of the hospital management. They said that due to lack of electricity, the condition of their patients started deteriorating. They are in a bad condition due to the heat. They kept passing the time by rotating hand fans throughout the night. The ICU treatment of patients admitted in the Special Care Unit of GMCH was also affected. Patients admitted in critical condition could not get the facility of ECG, cardiac monitor. At the same time, due to the power supply being cut off, the SNCU facility available to the newborn admitted in the SNCU of the pediatric department was affected.

There was a lot of trouble in OPD too

Due to the lack of proper electricity supply till 8:30 am on Friday, treatment of patients in OPD started late in GMCH. There was a long queue of patients and their relatives for registration. Some doctors were sitting in their chambers and waiting for the patients to come with slips. But, due to lack of electricity supply, the staff at the registration counter was troubled. Later, the staff at the counter started issuing slips manually with the help of mobile torch.

Could not talk to GMCH superintendent

In this regard, GMCH Superintendent Dr Sudha Bharti says that the delivery of women was done with some other arrangement and not with the help of torch. It is not clear from her what that arrangement was. She also said that when I inquired, the people of the department told me that the operation was done with the backup of the inverter. On the question of alternative arrangement in case of power failure, she said that we have been making arrangements for this arrangement for the last one month, but LNT has not been able to provide that arrangement. She said that this has happened due to the poor arrangement of LNT.
