What is extradition treaty?

An extradition treaty between two countries means that when a citizen of a country, who is wanted in a criminal case, flees and takes refuge in a country with which he has an extradition treaty, he has to send him back to his country. However, it largely depends on the conditions of extradition whether a country will hand over such a criminal or not. The conditions for extradition vary in political cases.

There is a treaty between India and Bangladesh

As far as India and Bangladesh are concerned, there is an extradition treaty between the two countries. Both the countries had signed this treaty in 2013. Under this, in 2020, India had extradited two accused of the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to Bangladesh. At the same time, Bangladesh had also handed over United Liberation Front of Assam General Secretary Anup Chetia to India.

Is there any treaty with Pakistan also?

This is not the case with Pakistan. Actually, there is no such treaty between the two countries, under which both the countries are forced to hand over the criminals of each other. Let us tell you, when India had demanded extradition of Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan had issued a statement. It was said that no bilateral extradition treaty exists between India and Pakistan.
