Sim card rule: The Telecom Ministry has changed the rules for buying a new mobile connection from January 1, 2024. With this, it has now become easier for customers to buy a new SIM card. To promote digitization in the country, the Department of Telecommunications has informed that now paper-based KYC will be completely banned for getting a new SIM card. In such a situation, now customers will have to submit only digital or e-KYC to get a new SIM card. Apart from this, the government has also fixed the age limit for buying a SIM. People of this age will not get SIM card

The Department of Telecommunications issued a notification saying that SIM cards should not be issued to minors. This means that now any person in the country who is below 18 years of age will not be able to get a connection from any telecom company. The Department of Telecommunications further said that selling a SIM card to a minor will be considered an illegal activity of the telecom operator.

It is mandatory to fill the CAF form

To get a new connection or buy a new SIM card, the customer has to fill a customer acquisition form which is an agreement between the telecom company and the customer. The government has now brought some changes in this form, under which strict action has been taken for selling SIM cards or giving new connections to people below 18 years of age. At the same time, a person suffering from mental condition will also not be eligible to get a SIM card in his name. Apart from this, the government has given guidelines to issue SIM cards for just one rupee. For this, any kind of physical paperwork has been banned in buying a SIM, while digital KYC has been promoted. In such a situation, the customer will not need to submit any kind of document to get a SIM. Customers will be able to do KYC themselves on the provider company’s app and buy SIM, the fee of which has been kept at just one rupee. Apart from this, no paperwork will be required to convert postpaid SIM to prepaid.
