Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Shaili Oberoi has been elected mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In fact, long after the elections, the tussle for the post of mayor continued, but after the intervention of the court, the elections were conducted. Now Shelly Oberoi has won this election. Shelly Oberoi is a councilor from ward number 86 of Patel Nagar. It is being told that Shelly Oberoi has been an assistant professor at Delhi University and is a life time member of the Indian Commerce Association. After Shaili Oberoi became an assistant professor, questions are being raised that how can one become a mayor while being a professor.
Who is Shaili Oberoi?
Besides being a professor, He has a Doctorate in Philosophy from the School of Management Studies (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He has also been honored in many national and international conferences, including Professor Manubhai Shah Award etc. Prior to this, he has studied B.Com from Janaki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi. Shaili Oberoi joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2013 and was the vice-president of its women’s wing till 2020.
Can a professor become mayor?
Now the question is Whether a professor can become a mayor. We get the answer to this question in an article by Professor Ira Bhaskar, who was the Dean of Jawaharlal Nehru University. A few years ago, after the crackdown on JNU teachers, he wrote an article in The Times of India asking whether professors should be counted as government employees or not. Let us tell you that according to CCS Rules 1964, no government employee can participate in elections, political activities. Because of this government employees cannot contest elections.
On this Ira Bhaskar had told that universities and even government universities have been made as autonomous bodies and their teachers are government employees are not.
