A British student whose heart stopped beating after a 25-minute surgery. The student had a silent killer disease. This disease was not known in the beginning. Actually, 20-year-old Charlie Vincent got a dangerous sunburn during a trip to America. Due to which he suffered severe burns. When he was admitted to the hospital due to the burns, symptoms of pneumonia appeared in his lungs.
Charlie had an infection in his windpipe
Charlie, from Northamptonshire, had surgery to treat an infection in his windpipe. But he suffered a shock cardiac arrest during surgery. He suffered a small stroke after doctors tried to restart his heart. It took 25 minutes for his heart to return to normal after the operation. Charlie’s 24-year-old sister Emily Vincent described his recovery from the operating table as a ‘miracle’.
Charlie’s sister says that for a while I thought that Charlie would not survive. My heart was sinking at this thought. It is nothing less than a miracle for our entire family that Charlie is with us. Charlie had gone on vacation to a summer camp in America. During this time his condition became critical.
Charlie’s sister Emily says that over the next few days his condition deteriorated rapidly and my brother fell ill. The third-year film student at De Montfort University in Leicester was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment as doctors diagnosed a serious silent illness.
Charlie had this dangerous heart disease along with pneumonia
Emily said that after a routine checkup, the doctors found that he had pneumonia in his lungs and his heart was also enlarged. Charlie’s vital organs were working more than normal.
Two major health concerns worried doctors, who began planning to operate on 20-year-old Charlie before his condition worsened. Doctors say Charlie had a dangerous heart problem since birth.
This is known as cardiomegaly. But it got worse and worse because of the pneumonia. Emily was told by the doctors that his condition was serious, even the doctors were very scared for him, and it must have been scary for him not having anyone around him. He has always been a healthy boy, he never had any problems with his heart before, so we were surprised when he deteriorated so quickly.
Charlie spent a week in a coma after the dangerous surgery. The doctors told him that he might have to undergo a heart and lung transplant. But nothing like that happened. Charlie regained consciousness after a few days. And he is currently undergoing treatment.
