Canada accuses India in election interference calls it a foreign threat in intelligence report


Canada accuses India: Canada’s Security Intelligence Agency has, in a report, accused India of interfering in the country’s elections. In its report, the agency described India as a “foreign interference threat” and said the government should “do more to protect Canada’s strong democratic institutions and processes.”

Canadian media Global News said in its briefing report – This is the first time that Canada has accused India of interfering in elections. China and Russia were already being accused of interfering in Canadian politics.

On February 24, 2023, the agency had reported with the headline ‘Briefing to the Minister of Democratic Institutions on foreign interference’. China is also named in this report and has been called “the most significant threat so far”.

The report said that the People’s Republic of China’s FI activities (foreign interference) are broad in scope and significant in the level of resources spent. The report said that China’s activities are significant, widespread and against all levels of government and citizens across the country.

According to the briefing report of Global News, in Canada’s latest intelligence report, India and China are the only two countries which have been described as a threat to the elections. Russia’s name is not included in this report.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government ordered the investigation after several news reports by Global News and the Globe and Mail pointed to Chinese interference in Canadian elections. A recently released Canadian intelligence briefing, citing Global News and Globe reporting, said it “has focused on the People’s Republic of China’s FI efforts in Canada, particularly in relation to the election.” Issues related to India have been written in about three pages of the report.
