Canada Justin Trudeau government imposes heavy fine on Indian IT company Infosys


Canada Infosys: Canada’s Trudeau government has taken major action against Indian IT company Infosys. It is being told that Canada has taken this action due to less payment of Employee Health Tax (EHT). A huge fine has been imposed on the company for the year 2020. On May 9, the company received an order from the Foreign Ministry of Canada regarding the fine.

Infosys said in the stock exchange information that, ‘Penalty has been imposed for alleged short payment of employee health tax during the year ending December 31, 2020.’ According to the stock exchange, a fine of 1,34,822.38 Canadian dollars has been imposed on the company. At present, despite this fine, there has been no impact on the financial operations or other activities of the company.

The Employee Health Tax (EHT) is a mandatory tax imposed by the government on companies in provinces such as Ontario and British Columbia. It is calculated keeping in mind many items like salary, bonus, taxable benefits and stocks received by the employee. The purpose of this tax is to support health care services in the province.

When does employee tax have to be paid?
In Ontario, employers who have employees living and working at a workplace in Ontario are required to pay employee taxes. This tax does not apply to people working out of other private locations, even if they are being paid in Ontario.
