First step: Studying this subject is important

If you have decided to become a counsellor, then studying Psychology as a subject in 12th can be a good option. However, if you decide after this that you want to make a career in counselling, then definitely choose Psychology as a subject at UG level.

Second step: You will have to get a bachelor’s degree

If you want to move ahead in this field and adopt it as a career, then it would be better if you take a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Your journey will start from here, which you can complete with many degrees. Those who have basic knowledge and start from zero excel in their field later. Even if you did not study psychology in 12th, do not worry, you can take a bachelor’s degree in this subject.

You can do this course from any famous university like Delhi University, JMI New Delhi, Punjab University, BHU, MMU Christ University Bangalore etc.

Third step: Now it’s the turn of the masters

After this comes the turn to do Masters. To get practical knowledge in your field and to do specialization in it, you will now need a Masters degree. Here many subjects like counseling theory, social and cultural diversity, counseling issues, career development are taught and research is also done. After completing internship, dissertation etc., you will get a Masters degree in this field.

For this also you can apply for admission in the colleges mentioned above. Admission at all places is done through entrance examination.

Step four: Diploma will enhance your career

By the time you complete your degree, you will have decided that you want to do counseling in a particular area and that will become your specialty. In such a situation, to increase your qualification, you can take a diploma in that particular area. Such as PG Diploma in Guidance and Counseling. This will help you move forward. However, this is completely optional, if you want, you can move forward without this course or this diploma.

Step 5: The journey is over

Your qualification to become a counsellor has been completed and now you have to start your work. By the time you reach this stage, your specialisation will be decided. For example, in which area do you want to work – child counselling, victim support, career counselling, academic counselling, relationship and marriage counselling, health counselling or rehabilitation counselling etc.

Choose a professional institute according to your choice and join them for practical knowledge and experience. Even if the earnings are less initially, gather experience and when you become knowledgeable, switch. Here, after some time, not only the money is good but the satisfaction is also of a different level.
