Keratin Treatment : Nowadays people are getting keratin treatment to make their hair more beautiful. Women are taking this treatment every 6 months to get rid of frizzy hair, make it shinier, straighter and silkier. It is beneficial to some extent but this treatment which enhances the beauty of hair can also be harmful for many parts of the body. According to a recent research, keratin treatment can damage the kidneys. Know how…
How harmful is keratin treatment?
A recent study report published in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ states that keratin-based hair straightening products contain glyoxylic acid, which can rapidly increase the risk of acute kidney injury. Similar results were also seen in a study report published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Researchers identified 26 patients in Israel who had used keratin-based hair straightening to straighten their hair. All of them had severe acute kidney injury. According to the study, 7 of these patients underwent kidney biopsy, of which 6 had tratubular calcium oxalate deposition and one had microcalcification in tubular cells.
How much effect does carotene treatment have on the kidneys
Earlier, formaldehyde was found in keratin-based hair straightening products, which had a bad effect on hair, eyes and skin. Later, formaldehyde was changed to glycolic acid. Then it was thought that there would be no harm from using keratin products, but a report published in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ has mentioned its disadvantages as well.
Experts say that when glycolic acid starts metabolizing, more glyoxylic acid is formed and later it works to form oxalate. This works to damage the kidney. When glycolic acid dissolves in the blood, it turns into oxalate, which can increase kidney problems.
Precautions regarding keratin hair treatment
Glycolic acid is also used in many beauty products such as face products, toner, serum, moisturizer. However, due to its very low quantity, it does not have much negative effect on the kidneys. But keratin-based hair products contain high amount of acid, which can increase the risk.
In such a situation, while taking keratin based hair treatment, the ventilation of that room should be kept correct. Hand gloves and mask should be worn so that it does not reach the blood through the nose or any other medium. Apart from this, this treatment should be taken only after consulting a skin expert.
