Telangana State Health Ministry clarified that the state is keeping a vigilant eye on the news of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) coming from China and is monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Union Health Ministry. The Health Department has appealed to the citizens to avoid rumors and follow precautions.

No case of hMPV recorded in Telangana

The Telangana Health Department analyzed data on respiratory infections present in the state and found that there is no significant increase in cases of infection in December 2023 compared to December 2024.

Precautionary instructions

The Health Department has urged citizens to take the following precautions to prevent respiratory infections and has issued guidelines-

What to do:

  1. Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing.
  2. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  3. Avoid crowded places and maintain distance from people affected by flu.
  4. Avoid going to public places if you have fever, cough or sneeze.
  5. Drink adequate amount of water and eat nutritious food.
  6. Ensure adequate ventilation at all locations.
  7. Stay home when you are sick and limit contact with others.
  8. Get enough sleep.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid shaking hands.
  2. Do not use tissue paper or handkerchief again and again.
  3. Do not come in contact with sick people.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth repeatedly.
  5. Avoid spitting in public places.
  6. Do not take medicines without doctor’s advice.

What did the Union Health Ministry say?

The Director of DGHS and National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India, has issued a statement regarding the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China. The statement said that Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common respiratory infection virus, which causes cold and flu-like symptoms during the winter season. It especially affects small children and the elderly.

Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Atul Goyal said that there is no need to panic. Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes the common cold; It can cause flu-like symptoms in very old and young people.
