M devendra fadnavis on sambhaji: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday (February 18, 2025) directed the State Cyber Police to contact Wikipedia and ask to remove objectionable material about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The Chief Minister said that the open-source platform will not be accepted tampering with history. He said, “We will not tolerate wrong information on free source platforms like Wikipedia.”
Controversy arose in the background of the film ‘Chhava’
Objection to objectionable content on Wikipedia has come in the context of the recently released Hindi film Chhava. The film is based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Instructions given to cyber police
Fadnavis said, “I have ordered the Inspector General of Maharashtra Cyber Cell to contact Wikipedia officials and take necessary steps to remove objectionable material against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.” The Chief Minister also said that Wikipedia is not operated from India. It is and managed by some editorial rights. He said, “We can request them to make some rules so that historical facts can be prevented from distorting.”

Discussion on social media regulation with center
Fadnavis also expressed his concern about the regulation of social media platforms. He said, “Social media has no geographical jurisdiction. We will discuss this with the Central Government. “
Need to balance freedom of expression
The Chief Minister said that freedom of expression cannot be uncontrolled. He said, “When pornography or false facts cross the limit, action can be taken.”
Strict warning on cabinet agenda leak
Fadnavis also warned that it is not acceptable to unauthorized the agenda documents before the cabinet meeting. He said, “I have instructed the offices of the ministers not to share the cabinet agenda in advance. If this continues, I will have to take action. Do not break the law.”
