Congress Leader and Ex Governor Margaret Alva raised issue on governor working style

Margaret Alva on Governor Working: Congress leader and former Union Minister Margaret Alva has alleged that Raj Bhavans in many states are functioning like party offices and governors are playing a political role in forming and toppling governments.

Margaret Alva, who has been the Governor of four states, while addressing a session at the 17th Jaipur Literary Festival (JLF) on Saturday said that Governors are not agents of political parties. They are expected to behave in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution in Raj Bhavans.

‘Seeing conflict between Raj Bhavan and governments every day’

“The whole concept of the role of the Governor is to keep the federal system running,” he said in the session ‘We the People: The Center and the States’. Today there are challenges, behavior is being done out of the ordinary and we are seeing this in many states. In many circumstances, Raj Bhavans are functioning like party offices.” Alva, who has been the governor of Uttarakhand, Goa, Gujarat and Rajasthan, said, “Governors play a political role in forming and bringing down governments, ignoring the advice of state cabinets. Are paying. The reality is that we see daily conflicts between Raj Bhavan and governments in many states. I believe this is not the right thing.

‘The dignity of the post of Governor is being destroyed’

Giving the examples of Kerala, Puducherry and Delhi, he explained how the Governor is allegedly acting as a representative of the Central Government and is repeatedly obstructing the policies of the state. Alva said, “You can see that the Governor of Kerala is protesting against the government by sitting on the road. This destroys the dignity of the post. You have seen the bad condition of West Bengal or Puducherry, where the Governor refused to comply with the orders of the High Court and continued giving orders to the administration. What is happening in Delhi?” He said, ”What I mean to say is that if the Governor ignores the constitutional system, then these are the people who will create disputes between the Center and the states.”
