The ‘National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority’ (NPPA) has decided to reduce the prices of 127 medicines on Tuesday. These 127 medicines have got a place under the cap. Under this, the prices of some medicines will be reduced. The cost of the price of many medicines like paracetamol has come down. The cost of some medicines including metformin and montelukast has gone up.
Price of 127 medicines including paracetamol, amoxicillin reduced
The 127 drugs on the NPPA list include paracetamol, amoxicillin, rabeprazole and metformin. These are the medicines that we use in everyday life. Paracetamol (650 mg), which is sold for Rs 2.3 per tablet. Now its price has been reduced to Rs.1.8. Earlier this year, NPPA had reduced the prices of combination formulations of paracetamol. The price of amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate was also reduced from Rs 22.3 to Rs 16.8 per tablet.

The price of Moxifloxacin (400mg) has also been discounted from Rs 31.5 per tablet to Rs 22.8 per tablet. The price of this drug, used in the treatment of bacterial infection related diseases like pneumonia, has been reduced for the first time this year. However, the price of some medicines like metformin (500mg) has been increased from Rs 1.7 to Rs 1.8 in the new list. Last year, the price of metformin, a drug used in diseases like diabetes, was increased. It is used in diabetes type 2.
TOI had a special conversation with Rajeev Singhal, general secretary of ‘All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists’ (AIOCD), in which he told that the prices of some medicines like Paracetamol are already the lowest. Due to the reduction in the price of over-the-counter medicines (APIs), the shopkeepers have less option left to sell the medicines at a lower price. If the price of medicines is low, it is expected that the supply will not be affected in future.
New price medicines will come in the market by the end of January
According to Sajal Ganguly, secretary of the ‘Bengal Chemists and Druggists Association’ (BCDA), new priced medicines will start arriving by the end of January. He said, ‘It usually takes a month for new priced drugs to come in the market. We should get new stock by the end of next month.
