Past of caste violence in Manipur
Due to the ongoing caste violence in Manipur since May last year, more than two hundred people have been killed and thousands have been rendered homeless from their homes. The violence is taking place between the Meitei community of Imphal Valley and the Kuki community settled in the surrounding hilly areas. The history of violence in Manipur is linked to ethnic and political conflicts. There has been long-standing tension between the Kuki, Naga and Meitei communities in the state.
The issue of Manipur is also related to the rights of independence, identity and self-governance. Since the 1990s, several militant organizations have emerged in Manipur, with the aim of protecting their respective ethnic identities and demanding secession from the state. As a result, there has been frequent violence, firing and military action, leading to instability in the social and political environment of the state.
