The tradition is 2000 years old
This tradition is followed in Sagada village located in the Cordillera Central mountains of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. It is said that this practice has been going on for almost 2000 years. In funeral customs, the Igorot people carve the coffins with their own hands. After that they bury their dead in the same carved coffins. After this those coffins are tied to the edge of the rock. Or a big nail is used for this. These coffins are hung high above the ground.

Why is this done?
Actually, there are two different opinions behind this practice. People of the Igorot tribe hang the dead bodies of their relatives in the air. So that he can remain close to his soul. So, regarding this practice, it is also said that the elders of the Igorot tribe were afraid of being buried in the ground. He did not want to be buried after that. He wanted his body to be kept at a place where it would remain safe for a longer period of time. That is why this tradition is followed.
