In the tradition of Dahi Handi, the childhood antics of Lord Krishna are presented. The event of Dahi Handi is also called Gopal Kala or Dahi Kala. It is believed in Hinduism that in ancient times, Kanha used to go from house to house and steal butter from people’s pots and eat it. If the pot (handi) was hanging high, he used to break it and steal the butter.
It is said that all the sorrows of the house where Kanha used to step, would be removed. It is believed that breaking the pot to steal butter in the house removes the sorrows of the house and happiness prevails.
History of Dahi Handi
According to mythology, in the Dwapar era, Lord Krishna used to steal butter and sugar candy in his childhood and distribute it among his friends. Troubled by the theft of butter, the Gopis started hanging the butter at a high place but this attempt of the Gopis also failed.
Naughty Kanha used to steal butter from there along with his group of friends and eat it with great relish. These childhood antics of Lord Krishna are celebrated in the form of Dahi Handi festival.
