Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries: Hosted by India, a gathering of Defense Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries will be held in New Delhi from today. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over this meeting to be held on 28 April. Along with this, he will also have a bilateral meeting with Chinese Defense Minister Li Shengfu coming for this meeting.
Defense ministers of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan are arriving to participate in the meeting. Along with this, India has also invited Defense Ministers of SCO observer countries including Belarus, Iran. The Defense Minister of Pakistan will participate in the meeting in a virtual manner.
India’s Defense Minister will hold many important meetings
According to the Defense Ministry, the Defense Ministers of SCO countries under the leadership of India will also talk about regional peace, security and anti-terrorist efforts in the SCO region. Along with this, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of Defense, there will be a discussion on measures to strengthen multilateral cooperation in the meeting.
The Defense Minister of India will also hold several important bilateral meetings on April 27 and 28, 2023 along with the Defense Ministers of various countries coming for this meeting. Where bilateral defense related issues and other matters of mutual interest will be discussed. The most important meeting in this episode is to be held between the Defense Ministers of India and China. According to sources, his meeting with the Chinese Defense Minister is possible between 4-7 pm on Thursday.
Amidst the India-China border dispute…
This will be the first time between the ongoing border tension between India and China since May 2020 when the Chinese Defense Minister will visit India. Along with this, after a long time on Indian soil, the Defense Ministers of both the countries will be together at the negotiating table. However, just before this important meeting, senior military commander level talks between the two countries have already taken place on 23 April.
According to officials associated with the preparations for the SCO Defense Ministers’ meeting, India considers the SCO as an important platform for multilateral cooperation, political dialogue, security, economic and people-to-people contact at the regional level. India, which is holding the presidency of SCO this year, also organized two defense-related activities to increase activism among the member countries. Under this, a workshop was organized on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Along with this, a meeting of defense think-tanks of SCO countries was also organized on the issue of contribution of armed forces in military medicine, health and epidemics.
Between the Russia Ukraine war, the platform of SCO is important in terms of India’s diplomatic balance. India has been raising several important issues of connectivity and regional security at this forum with the active participation of Russia and China ever since it gained full membership of the grouping in 2017.
