The first rain of monsoon created havoc in the capital. Due to heavy rain, the four court shed of Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed in the early hours of Friday. Its heavy iron structure fell on several cabs standing waiting for pick and drop. Four cabs were badly damaged due to its impact. One cab driver died in the tragic accident. While six others were injured. Police and fire brigade personnel reached the spot and started rescue operations. The dead cab driver was taken out by lifting the beam with the help of a crane. At the same time, the injured were taken out of the cab and admitted to a nearby hospital. The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Kumar (45).

After the incident, Terminal-1 was completely closed. This disrupted around 190-200 flights. Most of these flights were of IndiGo and SpiceJet. Both have given their passengers the option of refunding their fare or taking a flight the next day due to flight cancellation. DIAL says that services from Terminal-1 can resume on Saturday only after a thorough investigation. Police have registered a case of death due to negligence.

On the other hand, after getting information about the accident, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu reached IGI Airport to inspect the spot. The Union Minister has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the person who lost his life in the accident. He also said that Rs 3 lakh each will be given to the injured. The Aviation Minister said that the government has taken the accident seriously. Not only IGI Airport, but we will re-inspect all the airports in the entire country. This will prevent such accidents in future.
