Delhi Traffic Police has made a big change in traffic operations. Now Delhi will have 50 circles instead of 69. Due to reduction in circles, Delhi traffic has got more than 400 policemen. Now only these policemen and officers will manage the traffic. This will greatly improve the traffic of Delhi and get rid of the jam.
Delhi Traffic Police constituted a committee of experts and got a study done and after that traffic circles have been reduced. This is the second decision of the former police commissioner which has been returned. Earlier, the decision of PCR vans attached to the police stations was changed by the present Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.
A senior Delhi Police officer (traffic) said that former police commissioner Rakesh Asthana had increased the number of traffic circles from 53 to 69 per sub-division. The districts of the traffic police were reduced to 15 and the command of the district was given to the DCP. Earlier the district was handled by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). The DCP handles the range made by combining two and three districts. The ACPs now handle the sub-divisions formed out of two and three circles. Due to this, where the balance of the traffic circles had deteriorated, the staff in the offices had increased. To handle traffic, traffic was staffed in more offices than on roads.
According to Delhi Traffic Police officials, such circles were made where there was no need to make circles. These circles neither had main roads nor had much traffic. In such a situation, a committee has been formed to decide how many circles should be reduced, how many points should be created and how to improve the traffic system. The committee constituted under the supervision of Vijay Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Traffic Police, has members from IIT, Delhi, DTU, Central Road and Safety Institute and School of Architecture and Planning. This decision has been withdrawn on last Saturday. From last Saturday, 50 circles of traffic police have started functioning in Delhi.

A senior traffic police official told that 19 TI offices and many ACP offices have been closed since circles have been done. If you look at a rough example, 10 staff were saved due to the closure of a circle office. Apart from this, about 70 more policemen are deployed in a circle. With the closure of 19 circles, this staff has been posted in other circles.
