New Delhi. The court directed Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora to hold a meeting with civic agencies to install CCTV cameras in case of accidents. The court said that serious efforts should be made to install high-resolution cameras at sensitive places. The court also sought a detailed report on traffic management from Delhi’s top police officer in connection with several road accidents that resulted in deaths or injuries. The court observed that most of the road accident cases remain unsolved even in this age of technology and the victims are deprived of justice.

The court noted that accident-prone areas included NH-8, Ring Road and Dhaula Kuan. Motor Accident Claims Tribunal’s presiding officer Shefali Barnala Tandon was hearing an application filed by Vipin Kumar, an inspector, seeking directions to civic agencies to install CCTV cameras on NH-8, Ring Road and Dhaula Kuan. The court has directed the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to hold a meeting with the civic agencies i.e. National Highways Authority of India, PWD (Public Works Department), Delhi. Cantonment Board etc. to install CCTV cameras on NH-8, Ring Road, Dhaula Kuan etc. and make best efforts to install high-resolution CCTV cameras at the above mentioned places at the earliest.

The judge noted that as per the application, NH-8, Ring Road and Dhaula Kuan Loop are accident-prone areas and in the absence of high-quality CCTV cameras, most of the accident cases go unsolved. Of the 35 fatal accident cases in 2022, 21 remained unsolved. The court noted that the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019, being a benevolent legislation, aims at compensation. Most of the road accident cases remain unsolved even in this age of technology and the victims are deprived of justice.
