The exercise of running small electric mohalla buses in the streets and narrow lanes of the capital has intensified. To strengthen the public transport system, the Delhi government has started a survey from Thursday to identify different areas, routes and assess the needs of the people. Importantly, before the launch of the Mohalla Bus service, Delhiites can share their suggestions and feedback at mohallabusfeedback@gmail.com.

Technical teams will visit major public places including metro stations, bus terminals, stands for the survey. In this, all aspects including passengers and routes will be studied closely. The data collected during the 15 days study will be digitized. This will be used to decide the origin and destination of the proposed mohalla bus service in each locality. The objective of the survey is to identify possible routes so that commuters in the respective areas can be provided with easy access to all public transport options.
Study will be done on these aspects
- Travel demand assessment: The team members will assess the last mile connectivity needs in different regions. For this, the availability of transport means and the preferences of the residents will be studied.
- Road network: Road width, encroachment and aspects necessary for smooth movement will also be assessed.
- Existing connectivity: Passenger needs will be assessed based on distance and area to access public modes of transport.
- Para-Transit Connectivity: Availability of e-rickshaws, autos and other options will also be studied in each area.
Important initiative for sustainable and accessible transport system: Gehlot
Finance and Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot had announced the Mohalla Bus Scheme in the budget speech. It aims to deploy 9 meter long e-buses to provide feeder bus services. It is being considered as an important step towards establishing a sustainable and accessible transport system in Delhi. The Kejriwal government plans to run a total of 2,180 e-buses by 2025.
Mohalla buses will be run especially in those areas of Delhi where the road width is less. Due to this, regular 12 meter buses cannot run especially in crowded places. The move is expected to improve Delhi’s transport system by increasing connectivity in these areas.
