A bloody clash broke out between two prisoners in Asia’s most secure Tihar Jail on Friday afternoon. In a dispute over food with an Afghan prisoner lodged in jail number three, a prisoner named Deepak Soni was murdered with a knife-like weapon. The accused attacked Deepak on the chest with a hand-crafted weapon. The accused and a jail employee were also injured during the clash. All three were sent to DDU Hospital, where doctors declared Deepak dead. Both of them were discharged after first aid. Police have registered a case of murder. Also, orders have been given for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Deceased Deepak Soni (29) was a resident of Shakurpur area. He was arrested in 2018 in a case of murder during robbery in Paschim Vihar area. He was lodged in jail number three. He used to work as a servant in the jail. The accused has been identified as Abdul Bashir Akhondzada (44), an Afghan resident. He lived on the footpath in Lajpat Nagar. In 2019, he was arrested in a case of attempt to murder in Lajpat Nagar. Since then he was lodged in jail number three.
According to jail sources, both the prisoners were present in a ward at 12.30 pm on Friday. During this time there was a dispute between them regarding some matter. After that Bashir attacked Deepak with a hand-made weapon. He became unconscious due to a knife attack on his chest. Despite this, the accused was continuously attacking Deepak. After the commotion, the QRT team present there reached the spot and controlled the accused with great difficulty. Bashir and a jail employee were also injured during the scuffle.
The jail staff immediately took all three to DDU Hospital. Where the doctors declared Deepak dead. After getting information from the hospital, the police reached there, took possession of Deepak’s body and sent it for post-mortem. Police have registered a case of murder. After initial investigation, the police officer said that the murder was not related to any gang war. In the morning there was some dispute between the two prisoners regarding food. After an altercation over the same matter, the accused committed the crime. Judicial inquiry into the matter has been ordered.
The new Jail Director General inspected the jail
After the retirement of Sanjay Beniwal on April 30, Satish Golcha has been made the new Director General of Jail. As soon as he took charge, a prisoner was killed in a clash between prisoners in jail number three on Friday. Jail sources say that after the incident, the Director General of Jail inspected jail number three in the evening. During this, he took information from the jail officials about the shortcomings of the jail. But the most important thing is that the prisoners who have been in jail for a long time are preparing weapons with their own hands. Which the jail administration is not able to control. A few days ago also there was a clash between two prisoners in the same jail. In which a prisoner was seriously injured. During this time also the prisoner who attacked had used a hand made weapon.
QRT team was formed to stop clashes in jail
After the murder of gangster Tillu Tajpuria and Prince in Tihar Jail, the jail administration had formed QRT team. The team was provided with such weapons so that they could control the prisoners during the clash. Also, such an incident should not happen again. But the incident that happened on Friday has once again exposed the security system of the jail.
