Detail Review: Johnny Depp suffered a lot due to the ongoing defamation and domestic disputes/violence case between Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard for the last few years. First, Disney removed him from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, when he had played the character of Captain Jack Sparrow, the main character of that series, in the last 5 films. Similarly, he also had to bid farewell to the films of the Fantastic Beasts series, in which he was acting as the main villain in the first two films.
Although the court dismissed all charges against Johnny Depp and his wife Amber was asked to pay a substantial amount of damages, Johnny decided that he would neither return as Captain Jack Sparrow nor Gellert Grindelwald, even though Why should they not have to wash their hands with huge fees. This is one of the main reasons why the audience did not enjoy watching Fantastic Beasts – The Secrets of Dumbledore and it is the least successful film of this series. When Warner Bros. bought the rights to film the Harry Potter series from author JK Rowling, they had no idea that the series would prove to be a goldmine for them.
When all the Harry Potter movies went on to do well at the box office, Warner Bros. must have asked JK Rowling to start the story of the Harry Potter series a little earlier and then wrote the prequel to Harry Potter i.e. Fantastic Beasts. Gellert Grindelwald had a very small role in the first film (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), but his mention kept coming in different places almost throughout the film. Johnny Depp’s character was in a bigger role in the second film (Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald). The third film in this series, Fantastic Beasts and the Dumbledore Secrets, is a very ambitious film but it was less well received by the audience.
Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), who becomes the headmaster of Hogwarts, the magic school of Harry Potter, has done many things in his life that he probably should not have done. Gellert Grindelwald is also mentioned in Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows. After the death of his parents, Dumbledore becomes busy with the upbringing of his younger brother and sister. On the other hand, Grindelwald is expelled from Darmstang, another magic school, because of his antics. He reaches out to Dumbledore in search of a dangerous magical secret. Both become friends, and both also fall in love.
Both swear that they will never fight against each other and together they will build a world where magicians will rule and common people will not live in this world. Albus’s brother Albeforth is enraged by Grindelwald’s antics and persuades his brother to give up his dream of ruling the wizarding world and think about his disabled sister. When things escalate, there is a fight between both the Dumbledore brothers and Grindelwald, in which Dumbledore’s sister is killed and Grindelwald escapes. After this Grindelwald collects the powers of dark magic and becomes the world’s most dreaded wizard. Albus and Grindelwald keep shying away from meeting.
In this part of the series, Dumbledore and Grindelwald meet after many years and Grindelwald again talks about eliminating humans from the world and establishing a world of wizards, but Dumbledore refuses him. The International Confederation of Wizards unites and acquits Grindelwald of all charges, and his demand to contest for the title of world’s greatest wizard is accepted. All the wizards from all over the world gather in Bhutan and once again Dumbledore and Grindelwald are face to face. In the midst of all this, Grindelwald keeps Dumbledore’s spies captive, but at the last moment all of them and some other wizards of Dumbledore’s team reach the election where Dumbledore’s best wizard is chosen but he refuses. Grindelwal, devastated by the defeat, vows to eliminate humans from all creation. Dumbledore and Grindelwald have a fight and Grindelwald disappears upon seeing his defeat in front.
The film is in the style of the Harry Potter series but is also different in its own way. Some new faces were seen in this part from both the previous parts. The decision not to cast Johnny Depp would probably cost Warner Bros. but they cast Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald. Although Mads is an established artist, but he had a lot of hesitation in replacing Johnny Depp because he himself is a big fan of Johnny. The amazing work done by Mads in this film is commendable because along with taking the place of Johnny, he had to give full introduction of his acting power. His acting was very different from Johnny’s but he never let it feel that he is playing this role for the first time. Mads turns Bond villain in Casino Royale. Played the lead role of Doctor Hannibal in the TV series Hannibal and also appeared in an important role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Originally a star of Danish films, Mads is given the status of an outstanding actor in international cinema. While Dumbledore is played by Jude Law. Jude is able to bring the subtlest expression on his face, so he is very good in a complex character like Dumbledore.
Jude Law was much loved for playing Doctor Watson in Sherlock Holmes opposite Robert Downey Jr. The role of Eddie Redmayne, who won at least a dozen awards, was important in this film because, like in the first two films, he was engaged in defeating Grindelwald together with Dumbledore. Ezra Miller plays Aurelius Dumbledore, son of Albeforth Dumbledore, brother of Albus Dumbledore. Ezra’s personal life is full of controversies but his performance as an actor is top class. When he gets information about his father, his performance in that scene is worth watching.
Director David Yates is a well-known name in the world of British television. He has also received many awards. While directing one of his films in 2004, he was informed that Warner Bros. wanted to assign him the responsibility of directing the next films in the Harry Potter series. David’s journey, which began in 2006 with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. David’s film making technique made the management of Warner Brothers his fan and for this reason he got to direct the films of the Fantastic Beasts series as well.
So far 3 films have come and it is possible that 2 more films will be added to this series. David’s understanding of the visual medium and his knack for getting the best out of his actors have made David one of the most successful directors in the world today. He keeps taking retakes of each shot until he himself is satisfied and that’s why his work is appreciated all over the world. A careful look at the scene where Dumbledore and Grindelwald meet shows how many layers of the story can be brought together in one scene.
James Newton Howard, who began his career with Elton John, adds to the dignity and emotion of each scene. Apart from this series, James has empowered the film with his music in films like Hunger Games, and Night Crawler. This time David has given the responsibility of cinematography to George Richmond and he did not disappoint at all. Editor Mark Day, who has been with David since the time of Harry Potter, has kept this long film from becoming cumbersome. Many tracks run together and giving screen time to each character according to their importance can only be the work of a skilled editor. Fantastic Beasts is a wonderful world, similar to Harry Potter but they also have their own distinct identity. Take out time to watch this fantasy film. It will be more fun if you watch all the three films together while binge watching.
