Detail Review: Sometimes by chance one gets to watch a complete masala film in Malayalam language, but even then its screenplay and direction are so perfect that one cannot live without praising that film. Recently ‘Kaduva’, which means lion, was released on Amazon Prime Video. Leaving aside the song and dance for a moment, the film is a classic revenge story. Kaduva will also be added to the list of hit films of famous director Shaji Kailas, because its story is true to a large extent, just stunts and action are kept like masala films.
The film’s hero Prithviraj has also got to do a film like this after a long time and that’s why he has also said in his interview that he enjoyed doing this film and he will not hold back from doing more such films. Malayalam masala film which has action, emotion, dialogues, excellent stunts and beautiful Kerala, watching such Kaduva will introduce you to another dimension of Malayalam cinema. The film is strong, it should be seen immediately.
Now-a-days films presenting the hero as larger than life have started running again. Bahubali, Pushpa, KGF and other similar movies are being liked nowadays. The reason for this could be the Boycott of Hindi films as well as the story of these films. The fun of watching Kaduva on the big screen will be something else but currently this film is available on Amazon Prime Video. This year’s biggest Malayalam film Kaduva created a lot of buzz at the box office as well. In the 1990s, Kaduvakunnel Kuriacha (Prithviraj) aka Kaduva, the owner of a huge plantation, clashes with IG Joseph Chandy Ousepukutty (Vivek Oberoi).
Actually, Kaduva is a little angry but he always supports the right. A new priest comes to his village church who is accused of molesting minor girls in private. Kaduva wants to catch him red-handed but because of Joseph’s mother, he misses the opportunity and Kaduva abuses his mother. The fight between the two starts from here and seeing the opportunity, Joseph gets Kaduva jailed with the help of his political bosses. During this, he burns Kaduva’s plantation with the help of his chamcha policemen, repeatedly raids his house, vandalizes Kaduva’s father’s car as well.
Due to lack of any evidence, Kaduva comes out on the vine and before his vicious mind, to remove Joseph’s political masters from the throne, by feeding money to the leaders of the opposition party, the government falls. All the cases against Kaduva are withdrawn and finally Joseph is suspended in the corruption case. Joseph sends a notorious goon to kill Kaduva but Kaduva kills him as well and eventually has a fight with Joseph where Kaduva wins. On his way to the jail, Joseph tells Kaduva that the fight is not over yet.
There is no doubt about Prithviraj’s acting ability, but his talking eyes sometimes drag the entire scene. He speaks slowly, shouts less but while hitting, he fights with all his might. There is also a wonderful dialogue play in the film. Jeenu Abraham, who entered the industry as a writer, has also directed a film named Adam John about Prithviraj. Jeenu has put absolutely clapping dialogues in this film, which have been liked by the audience very much. Both director Shaji and writer Jeenu have worked with Prithviraj many times in the past and hence have been able to get such a masala role out of a sensitive actor like Prithviraj. Mathew Thomas, an assistant of Jeenu, had also announced to make a film named Kaduva on this story with Suresh Gopi in the lead role.
A court case happened and Jeenu won the case, due to which Mathew’s film could not be made. In the National Award winning Prithviraj starrer Ayyapanam Koshiyam, another strong actor named Biju Thomas was going to be given the role of IG, but in that film too, Prithviraj and Biju had a fight and in Kaduva too, the audience was in for something new. Can’t see. After extensive search, Vivek Oberoi was approached for the role. He also said yes as soon as he heard the story. Vivek’s role is also good and Vivek has played this role to the best of his ability. They do not fear or suppress Prithviraj, but adopt different tactics to defeat and humiliate him. Not only does he get beaten up, but he also washes Prithviraj a lot. The rest of the cast is almost ordinary as the focus is entirely on Prithviraj and Vivek. The roles of Kalabhavan Shajon and Dilish Pothan are small but they also leave a lot of impact in their respective roles. There was very little for Samyukta Menon to do.
Jacques Bejoy’s music in the film makes each and every scene great, especially the action sequences. Kanal Kannan’s stunts are completely filmy and are closely intertwined with the story. Seeing the prison fight, it is natural to remember scenes from many Hindi films, but the best fight is when the police team that went to arrest Prithviraj stops him on the way and talks about beating him up. The manner in which the entire team washes the poori, it gives fun.
There was no innovation in the story, but the grandeur with which cinematographer Abhinandan Ramanujam has filmed the action scenes and stunts increases the scale of the film. For this reason, Kaduva rocked the box office as well and did business above 50 crores. For the Malayalam film industry, which gives priority to the story, a successful film at the box office acts as a sanjeevani. Janaganaman and Kaduva, both Prithviraj starrer films, have given some relief to the Malayalam box office. Kaduwa is a masala entertainer though it doesn’t have dance songs like Pushpa yet watching a film like this gives some more experience that if the story is good then it can be presented in a masala style and viewers must watch it Will.
