The court of ADJ IV (MP-MLA) Sharad Kumar Tripathi has convicted former MP Dhananjay Singh and his associate Santosh Vikram Singh in the case of kidnapping of Namami Gange project manager Abhinav Singhal, demanding extortion and threatening him with abusive language about three years and ten months ago. The court has issued a conviction warrant to Dhananjay and Santosh Vikram and sent them to the district jail. Making a scathing comment, the court said that the accused in the case is a former MP. Many criminal cases are registered against him. He is well known in the area, whereas the plaintiff is just an ordinary servant. In such a situation, the plaintiff retracting his statement out of fear does not give any benefit to the accused, even though there is other circumstantial evidence present in the case.

Abhinav Singhal, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, had lodged an FIR against former MPs Dhananjay Singh, Santosh Vikram Singh and two unknown persons under kidnapping, extortion and other sections at Line Bazar police station on 10 May 2020. Abhinav Singhal alleged that Santosh Vikram Singh and two other people had come to the site located at Pachatiya. From there, he was kidnapped at gunpoint in a four-wheeler and taken to the house of Dhananjay Singh in Mohalla Kalikutty.

Dhananjay Singh came with a pistol and started abusing and pressurizing his firm to supply low quality material. Dhananjay threatened them and demanded extortion money when they refused. Somehow he escaped from their clutches and went to Line Bazaar police station and filed a complaint against the accused and demanded action. The police arrested Dhananjay Singh from his residence and produced him in the court, from where he was sent to jail in judicial custody. Dhananjay came out of jail on bail from Allahabad High Court.
