Dharmendra is Bollywood’s most successful actor, not Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan has a record of 74 hits, but has never been called a superstar

Dharmendra not called superstar: There are many actors in Bollywood who were successful at the box office and gave many hit films but were never called superstars by the media or fans. Even the star who gave the most hit films in the history of Hindi cinema was never called a ‘superstar’.

Interestingly, the term superstar in Bollywood has been used for Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan and the three Khans, but none of them holds the record for working in the most number of hit films in their career. This record is only held by veteran actor Dharmendra. Then why was Dharmendra never called a ‘superstar’? Let’s find out here

Dharmendra holds the record for giving the most number of hit movies
Let us tell you that in his career spanning more than six decades, Dharmendra has given 74 hit films in the lead role. The actor, who has worked in 238 films, gave 7 blockbusters, 13 hits, 25 hits and 29 semi-hit films during his career. Apart from this, his 20 other films were above average at the box office, giving him 94 successes, which is more than any other star in Bollywood history.

After Dharmendra, these stars gave the most hit films
After Dharmendra, the star who has given the most number of hits is Jeetendra, who has 56 hits in his career. Amitabh Bachchan is also equal to him at 56th position, followed by Mithun Chakraborty (50) and Rajesh Khanna (42), who are in the top five. Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Shahrukh KhanRishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna are in the top 10. These stars have given 33-40 hit films.

Why was Dharmendra never called a superstar?
Let us tell you that Dharmendra, known as the ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood, made his Bollywood debut in 1960, but he got success from the 1964 film ‘Milan Ki Bela’ and ‘Haqiqat’ released in 1964. In the first decade of his career, even though Dharmendra gave many hits, he almost always remained second in his biggest films, which meant that stars like Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna were ahead of him.

Not Shahrukh-Salman or Amitabh... Dharmendra has the record of giving the most hit films, then why was he never called a 'superstar'?

As the actor rose to prominence in the 70s with hits like Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Sholay and Yaadon Ki Baaraat, he found himself second only to Amitabh Bachchan in stardom. By the 80s and 90s, Dharmendra’s hits were on a smaller scale, which meant they never topped the box office. After the mid-90s, Dharmendra started playing supporting roles.
