According to the news of Times of India, Dr. SV Madhu, Director and Professor of Endocrinology, College of Medical Sciences, said that since Type 2 Diabetes is caused by unhealthy lifestyle, it can be controlled only by making changes in lifestyle.

This requires losing 15 kg or more of weight, especially for those who are overweight or obese. Meaning, if you reduce obesity, the risk of diabetes can be reduced or controlled to a great extent.

Is there a need for medicine when diabetes is controlled?

Dr. Jasjeet Singh Wasir, Director of Endocrinology and Diabetology, Medanta Medicity, said that there is no need for medicine at normal blood sugar level. Dr. V. Mohan, President of Dr. Mohan Diabetes Specialty Center and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, said, overall less than 5% people get relief. He said that relief is considered only when the blood sugar level is less than 5.6.

People who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and are obese have a higher chance of survival than those who are not obese. Patients with diabetes with shorter time periods are more likely to be controlled; those who lose more than 15% of their initial weight have up to 80 percent more chances of remission.

AIIMS professor and consultant bariatric surgeon Dr. Sandeep Aggarwal said that bariatric surgery can be helpful in reducing weight, which is important in controlling type-2 diabetes. Analysis of weight loss after bariatric surgery showed that diabetes improved in 86.6% of patients.

What to do to control diabetes

1. Consuming 800 or less calories every day under the supervision of experts. Generally 1600-2000 calories should be taken daily.

2. Take 20-20 grams of low carb diet under the supervision of experts. Generally a person should take 200 grams of carbohydrates daily.

3. Focus on moderate exercise along with the right diet plan.
