Diwali 2024: There are differences in the calendar this year regarding the date of Diwali, because the new moon day of Kartik month will remain for two days, 31 October and 1 November. This year Kartik Amavasya will start from 3:53 pm on 31st October and will last till 6:17 pm on 1st November. Astrologer Dr. Anish Vyas, Director of Pal Balaji Astrology Institute, Jaipur – Jodhpur told that Lakshmi Puja also has special significance on the day of Diwali.
On this day, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati are worshiped during the auspicious time in the evening and night. Diwali, Govardhan Puja and lastly the festival of Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated. Diwali, the festival of lights, will be celebrated this time on Thursday, 31 October and Friday, 1 November. This festival can be celebrated when there is Amavasya for more than one hour from sunrise to sunset. Sunset on November 1 will be at 5:40 pm. After this, Amavasya will remain for 37 minutes. It is mentioned in the scriptures that Lakshmi Puja should be performed on the day when there is Amavasya during Pradosh Kaal i.e. at the time of sunset.

It is believed that on the night of Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi comes to earth and goes from house to house to see whose house is clean and whose place is being worshiped as per the rituals. Mother Lakshmi showers her blessings there. On Diwali, people do special worship of Goddess Lakshmi to attain happiness, prosperity and material comforts. It is written in Atharva Veda that Mother Earth, who gives water, food and all happiness, is worshiped as Bhagwati Lakshmi on the day of Diwali. The day of Kartik Amavasya finally replaces the eternal power of darkness, when small lamps start glowing. During Pradoshkaal, there is a tradition of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi along with Ganapati, Saraswati, Kuber and Lord Vishnu.

Kartik Shukla Pratipada i.e. Govardhan Puja festival is on Saturday 2nd November. There is a tradition of worshiping Govardhan Mountain located in Mathura on this day. In Dwapar Yuga, Shri Krishna had asked the people of Braj to worship Govardhan Mountain and not Kansa, since then this mountain is being worshipped.
Bhai Dooj on 3rd November (Bhai Dooj 2024)
Dr. Anish Vyas told that Bhai Dooj is on Sunday 3rd November. This festival is related to Yamuna and Yamraj. It is believed that on this date Yamraj visits his sister Yamuna. Yamuna provides food to Yamraj. It is believed that on this date, the brother who eats food at his sister’s house, by the grace of Yamraj-Yamuna, all his problems are removed and luck favors him.
