Rhabdo is a serious emergency disease. This happens when the muscles get injured due to too much workout. According to ‘Cleveland Clinic’, rhabdomyolysis is a serious injury in which a person’s muscles break down. When muscles break, the blood found in the veins of your muscles starts clotting and your blood circulation may get impaired. Due to which organ damage can occur and seizures may occur. It can cause permanent disability and in extreme cases even death. Excessive exercise and too much physical activity can cause serious injuries to the muscles. Which leads to a connection between this condition and intense workout programs like CrossFit and HIIT programs.

According to the CDC, symptoms include:

Muscle swelling and cramps

Tender, sore and weak muscles

Brown, red, or tea-colored urine

This is a life-threatening condition that can occur after injury or excessive exercise without rest.

Is Rhabdo disease common?

This is a serious muscle injury. According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 26,000 people suffer from this condition every year. Young men are one of the most at-risk demographics. A 2021 study analyzing cases reported between 2000 and 2019 showed that the number of hospital visits had increased 10-fold between the decades.

Rhabdo disease can be caused by dehydration. Rhabdo means the disease of rhabdomyolysis.  This rare condition occurs when muscle cells.  They burst and their contents leak into the bloodstream. This can cause a number of problems including weakness, muscle pain and dark or brown urine. This damage can be so severe that it can cause kidney injury.
