However, he used to add some special things to his Khichdi, due to which its taste increased manifold.

Khichdi is usually made from rice and moong dal. While rice fulfills the grains and carbohydrates, moong dal fulfills your protein needs. Besides, moong dal is also very easy to digest. However, to change and enhance the taste of Khichdi, many times people do various experiments in it. Just as many people sprout lentils and make khichdi with rice, others add coconut to the khichdi. vaKhichdi is a complete meal in itself. It is said about Khichdi, ‘Khichdi ke char yaar, dahi papad, ghee and pickle…’.

History of Khichdi

Khichdi has always been an important part of our Indian society since the 16th century. Village farmers and urban laborers eat it with great fondness. For years, more than half of India’s population was dependent on Khichdi. Not only this, Indian soldiers fighting in the Russian army also did not forget to eat Khichdi. However, while eating Khichdi, he used to dip his finger in the bowl of ghee again and again.

Even the emperors liked Khichdi

Even Emperor Akbar liked this Khichdi, full of taste and health. This Khichdi, the king’s favorite, is also mentioned in Aina-e-Akbari. However, the ghee used for Akbar’s Khichdi came from Hisar district of Haryana. No more ghee could be added to his khichdi. Jahangir had a similar hobby and he also used to eat Khichdi with great taste. Whenever Jahangir did not feel like eating anything heavy, he used to eat a special Gujarati Khichdi, which is called Lazeeja. Some dry fruits were also mixed in this khichdi along with pulses and rice.

The British also liked our Khichdi

The British named this khichdi ‘Kejri’ and they used to eat it with fried onions, boiled eggs and fish.
