Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was given an honorary doctorate at the 90th convocation of BHU on 15 March 2008. His wife Gursharan Kaur was also present with him in this function. Dr. Manmohan Singh, who came to attend the function as the chief guest, had come to Kashi a day earlier on March 14. Here he also met the weavers.

The 90th convocation of BHU was celebrated on 15 March 2008 in the amphitheater grounds of the university campus. The then Chancellor of the University Maharaja Karan Singh and Vice Chancellor Prof. were present at the ceremony. Punjab Singh was also sitting with him on the stage. Dr. Manmohan Singh was given a warm welcome as Prime Minister on his arrival in Kashi a day before the main function.
On March 14 itself, he met the weavers and heard their problems. Also obtained information related to weaving in Kashi. During the ceremony, Dr. Manmohan Singh had described the tradition of the university as the vision of Mahamana. It was said that BHU is a university where all subjects are taught in one campus.
The first prestigious engineering college was also established in BHU.
