Dussehra 2024: It is not mentioned in Valmiki Ramayan that Ravana was killed on the day of Dussehra, but its description is found in Kalika Purana. Let us know its classical form. According to Brahma Purana 60.15, the meaning of Dussehra is considered to be the destruction of ten sins.
According to Skanda Purana Uttarardha 3.52.92, the sins of ten births are destroyed on Dussehra. As per the ethos, Vijay Dashami is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country on the tenth day of Navratri.
- Dussehra or Vijayadashmi means the tenth day of Navratri. According to Devi Purana 3.27.49, on the day of Dashami, Lord Ram (Shri Ram) had completed the Navratri fast of Goddess Ji and left for Lanka from Kishkindha, hence it is called Vijay Dashami.
- Lord Ram had sought blessings of victory from the Goddess, hence people perform Shastra Puja on the day of Vijay Dashami. According to Bhavishya Purana Uttar Parva Chapter 138, the person who hopes for victory should worship his scriptures on Vijay Dashami.
Ravana’s death date mentioned in Kalika Purana
According to Kalika Purana 60.26-38, Ravana died on Ashwin Navami and Vijay Utsav was celebrated on Dashami day.

In today’s era, harmony between scriptures and weapons is necessary. If we rely only on weapons, man becomes violent like an animal, and if we rely only on scriptures, man appears weak (apart from saints and sages). Lord Ram maintained harmony between the two, he observed the fast of Navratri as per the scriptures and destroyed the enemies with weapons. We all should make Ram ji our source of inspiration. Think for yourself-

‘Dussehra’ is seen as the victory of Rama over Ravana and the victory of good over evil. Since this festival is being celebrated like this for centuries, we also continue to believe the same things.
After some digging, it is about a hundred years old. ‘Vratutsav Chandrika’ Attention was drawn to some excerpts of the article, where an article written on the classical beliefs and secular beliefs of Dussehra was seen. It is necessary to describe a little about the classical beliefs written in it. According to it, it is written in Bhavishyanottar Purana on Vijayadashami. It is also written in Chintamani book.

S Kalo Vijayo Naam, seeker of all desires.
That is, in the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month, there is a period called Vijay when one should set out to attack the enemies. All the desires are fulfilled by doing work during this period and doing Shri Ganesh. Lord Rama had left from Kishkindha at this time to attack Ravana. Following this tradition, the medieval kings used to celebrate by symbolically returning after crossing their border a little with all the provisions. Shami tree was definitely worshiped here.
Shami Shamvate Papam Shami Shatru Vinashayani.
That means – Shami is the remover of sins and the destroyer of enemies. This tree has been important since ancient times. According to Mahabharata Virat Parva (Chapter 41-41), before going to the unknown place, Pandavas had tied their weapons on the Shami tree in the forest. When the great kingdom was in trouble, Arjun quickly took Uttar Kumar and brought his weapons from the same Shami tree.
After that Arjun single-handedly defeated all the Kuru warriors (Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, Karna, Ashwathama, Duryodhana, etc.) and that too without an army.
Apart from this, in Bhavishyopakhyan Purana, Krishna says to Yudhishthir that: –
Ornamental Bhupitbhrityonvarga: Refinetotungturang Naga:.
Vaditnaad pratinaditkaash: sumanglacharparamparashih.
That is, Krishna explains to Yudhishthir that the king should punish himself and his people and cross the border in the east direction and worship Ashta Dikpal with singing and playing. Then after worshiping the Shami tree, make an idol or effigy of clay and shoot an arrow at its heart. Then return home after the celebration. The king gets good results from this. It is not wrong to think that this festival is mandatory for Kshatriyas.
In a secular manner, a procession was taken out at the place of later kings till the border, a tall effigy of Ravana was erected and it was attacked with bow and arrow. It has already been said that this festival is basically associated with Lord Rama. After returning to the capital, a festive procession would be taken out again the next day. The sight of Neelkanth bird on the day of Dussehra is considered auspicious.
The practice of Ramlila started in North India, especially in Punjab and Varanasi. The end of Ramlila started being celebrated as Vijayadashami on the day of Dussehra. Now Ravana Dahan is done in almost a large part of India. In Maharashtra, people distribute Sona Patta (Apta leaves) among all the houses to bring prosperity. The purpose of this article was to make people aware of the truth so that apart from the worldly form, people also know the classical form.
