ECI directs Assam government not to declare holiday on March 26 for Holi festival in all poll bound districts


Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The Election Commission (ECI) has directed the Assam government not to declare Holi holiday on March 26 in all election districts. However, districts where elections will be held in the second or third phase are allowed to declare a holiday.

According to HT report, MS Manivannan, Commissioner and Secretary, General Administration Department of Assam, had issued a notification in this regard to all the deputy commissioners of the state on March 21.

What is the ECI’s instructions for the election districts of Assam?

The notification said, “The Election Commission of India has already issued notification for holding general elections and the first phase is on March 19. As per the ECI order, it is directed that no District Commissioner (DC) of the districts going to polls in the first phase should declare March 26 as a local holiday on account of the upcoming Dol Jatra (Holi) as it will affect the nomination process. ”

There are 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. on these seats Lok Sabha Elections The three phases will take place on 19 April, 26 April and 7 May. At the same time, in the first phase, voting will be held on Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Jorhat seats of Assam. The last date for nomination for these Lok Sabha seats is March 27 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination is March 30. Whereas, the applications will be scrutinized on March 28.

There will be no holiday on Holi in these districts of Assam

Kaziranga emerged as a new seat following the Election Commission’s delimitations last year, while some old seats, including Kaliabor, were abolished. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has been MP from Kaliabor since 2014. Kaziranga includes 10 assembly seats from three districts Nagaon, Hojai and Golaghat. This means that Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Jorhat, and three other districts Nagaon, Hojai and Golaghat are not allowed to declare local holidays on Holi.

In the second phase in Assam, voting will be held in five Lok Sabha seats Darrang-Ulguri (General), Diphu (ST), Karimganj (General), Silchar (SC), and Nagaon (General). In the third phase, voting will be held in four seats Kokrajhar (ST), Dhubri (General), Barpeta (General), and Guwahati (General).
