Election Commission ON EVM: Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said on Wednesday (18 January) that parties complaining about the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have also won elections using the same equipment.
Responding to a question about allegations of EVM tampering, Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said, “If the EVM could speak, it would probably say that the one who has blamed your head, I have brought shame to his house too.” .”

Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said that EVMs started being used after the amendment in the Representation of the People Act, so it is the duty of the Election Commission to implement the law. Kumar said that EVMs have been praised in many judicial decisions including the Supreme Court. Courts have even imposed fines on those who have filed public interest litigations against the use of EVMs.
‘Don’t be used as a political football’
Former Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora also criticized parties questioning EVMs, saying it should not be used as a ‘political football’. Kumar reminded that the commission had published an advertisement in newspapers giving details of various opposition parties who have won elections through EVMs.

BSP supremo and former UP CM Mayawati had recently raised questions on EVMs and demanded that elections be conducted with ballot paper. He had said that there are apprehensions in the minds of people about EVMs and it is necessary to do this to remove them. Rahul Gandhi also said on Tuesday (January 17) that we too had raised the issue of EVMs. EVM is just one aspect.
When is the election?
The Election Commission on Wednesday (January 18) announced the dates for assembly elections in three northeastern states, under which polling will be held in Tripura on February 16, while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on a single day on February 27. The counting of votes in all the three states will take place on March 2.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar announced the important dates related to the elections of the three states. Along with this, before next year’s Lok Sabha elections, the dates of voting in the first round of assembly elections of nine states this year came to the fore.
