Expansion

Amidst the extremely severe winds, the Delhi government is undoubtedly appealing to the people to use the public transport service, but on Monday the passengers did not get even this support. Due to the strike by DTC contractual employees, passengers were seen waiting for buses amidst fog. Passengers faced a lot of trouble as about 50 percent of the DTC and cluster bus fleet was not on the road.

At present there are around 28 thousand contract workers in DTC. This includes driver, conductor and sweeper. Recruitment of employees on contract in the department was started 20 years ago. The workers demand that they have given many years of their lives to DTC. In such a situation, they should be given permanent jobs. And equal pay system should be implemented. Employees have been protesting against this demand for the last several years. On Saturday, Sarojini Nagar bus depot was started as a women’s bus depot. The then Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot inaugurated it. During this, dozens of women bus drivers started protesting demanding permanent jobs. The unions of many contract workers also supported this. On Monday, employees of many bus depots of the capital went on strike. Due to this, only less than 50 percent of the buses could hit the roads.

DTC formed committee

Regarding the protests that started two days ago, the then Transport Minister had asked DTC to form a committee on the demands of the contractual workers. In this regard, a committee has been constituted by the Managing Director of DTC on Monday. This committee will consider the demands of the contract workers and prepare a report.

It has been more than 30 minutes since we waited for the bus to Nangloi. Buses are not coming. Had to go for important work. In such a situation, now you will have to travel by auto or metro.

Have to go to Indrapuri to attend the wedding. It’s too late, the bus is not coming. Travel by bus is free. Now we will have to go by metro or auto.

Old buses are being replaced with new e-buses. These are being operated by a private company. The company itself is hiring the drivers. The salary is less there. After the removal of old buses, the jobs of those working in these buses will be in danger.

-Sanjay Mishra, bus driver working on contract

When we are employed like people with permanent jobs, then why are we not given equal pay? Our demand is that equal pay should be given for equal work and our jobs should be confirmed.
