Supreme Court: The Supreme Court on Saturday (January 27) stayed the order of CBI inquiry by the single bench of Calcutta High Court into alleged irregularities in issuing certificates to the reserve category. The court stayed all proceedings before the Calcutta High Court and issued notice to the West Bengal government and the petitioner. The Supreme Court will hear the case of irregularities related to fake certificate scam on January 29.
According to India Today report, Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay had demanded a CBI inquiry into medical admissions in West Bengal. The Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the order of Judge Gangopadhyay. This case pertains to alleged irregularities in the issuance of reserve category certificates and admission of MBBS students in government medical colleges and hospitals in West Bengal.
A bench of five judges of the Supreme Court heard
When Justice Gangopadhyay ordered a CBI investigation, the matter reached the division bench headed by Justice Soumen. He stopped this single-judge order. This angered Justice Gangopadhyay and he accused Justice Soumen of working for a political party. A five-member Constitution bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose heard the case today.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the West Bengal government and the petitioner in this matter. It also stayed orders passed through single-judge and division benches. The court said that this case will now be heard on Monday and its charge is now with it.
