What is endometriosis?

According to the news published in the English portal of India TV, when we talked about endometriosis with Dr. Ranjana Sharma, Senior Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, she told that it is a condition in which tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus develops outside it. This tissue can attach to organs like the ovaries, fallopian tubes or the outer surface of the uterus. It can cause a lot of pain and other problems.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

It begins with pelvic pain, which is often worse during menstruation but can occur at other times too. Women with endometriosis may experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pain during or after intercourse, and discomfort during bowel movements or urination, especially when they are menstruating.

Endometriosis can also impede fertility. Women who are diagnosed with endometriosis may be advised to consider egg preservation or completing their family sooner rather than later.

Causes of endometriosis

The exact cause of endometriosis is not completely clear, but several theories exist. One idea is that menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvic cavity through the fallopian tubes rather than out of the body. Another theory is that hormonal changes during puberty can cause cells to become endometrial-like tissue.

Treatment
Treatment for endometriosis focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. Pain can often be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Hormonal treatments, such as birth control pills or other medications,
can help reduce or stop menstruation, which in turn helps reduce pain. If these methods are ineffective, surgery may be needed to remove or destroy the excess tissue. In severe cases, a hysterectomy, i.e. removal of the uterus as well as both ovaries, may be considered. Some women also find relief from lifestyle changes, physiotherapy and alternative treatments such as acupuncture.
