Potatoes of inferior quality are being sold at expensive prices by saying that they are of good quality. There is not much awareness about potatoes, that’s why people are also buying substandard potatoes indiscriminately. These potatoes neither have any taste nor do they cook properly.

What is the real-fake potato issue?

These days ‘Hemangini’ or ‘Hemlini’ potato is being sold in many markets in the name of Chandramukhi potato. Let us tell you that Chandramukhi is the most variety of potato, which is sold in the market for Rs.50 per kg. The taste of dishes made from it is also very good. On the other hand, Hemangini potato is sold for only Rs.10-12 per kg. The taste and quality of this potato is not very good. This potato doesn’t even melt, that’s why the sale is also less. Both these quality potatoes are exactly the same in appearance, so the customer becomes a victim of fraud.

Due to this Hemangini dislikes potatoes

There are many reasons for not liking Hemangini potatoes, including the taste and being undercooked. Despite this, Hemangini potato cultivation is being done on a large scale in many areas of Punjab. In this case, members of the Hooghly Agricultural Cooperative Society say that the Hemangini potato origin is a mixed hybrid variety, whose seeds reach Punjab from other states. This variety gives more yield, so farmers prefer to cultivate it.

On the one hand, it takes 3-4 months to get ready for Chandramukhi potato, which gives a yield of 50 to 60 bags per bigha, while the yield of 90 to 95 bags can be obtained from the cultivation of Hemangini potato in 45 to 60 days. This variety is prepared in less time and less cost. Apart from Jalandhar, Hemangini potato is also cultivated on a large scale in Purshura and Tarakeswar of Hooghly district.

How to identify whether potato is real or fake

Hemangini and Chandramukhi potatoes look alike, but it is not difficult to spot the difference between the two. The peel of both these potatoes is thin, but when peeled, a different color comes out from inside. The color of Hemangini potato is white, while Chandramukhi potato is beige in color from inside.
