Former British PM Liz Truss on India: Former British Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss on Saturday (16 November 2024) stressed the need for major reforms in the United Kingdom, including solving the issues of the country’s powerful bureaucracy and a movement like the ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) campaign in the US. “To be honest, I think we need a British Trump. The question is who that person might be,” Truss said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. He stressed the need to reduce bureaucratic barriers to trade deals, especially with India and the US. He said that the bureaucracy associated with European rules was holding Britain back.
“So, I’m interested in how we can create a campaign, like MAGA or the Tea Party movement in America, that can create significant change,” he said. However, when asked if she would take up such a position, she laughingly replied, “I have already put my fingers in the fire and got burnt badly.”
India’s role in global geopolitics
Truss noted India’s growing importance on the global stage, describing it as “the world’s largest democracy” and one that “will play a major leadership role in future geopolitics”. He stressed on strengthening India-UK relations and expressed hope that both the countries will agree to a free trade agreement.
He said, “It is an equal partnership. Both sides will have to make compromises to make the deal happen, but the opportunities in the areas of technology, defense and agriculture are huge.” He also praised India’s role in the Quad alliance established by America, Britain, Japan and India to counter the growing influence of China.
Appreciation of Modi and India’s economic reforms
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Commenting on Britain’s historic third term, Truss described it as “a huge achievement”, especially in a global environment where incumbent governments are increasingly finding it difficult to remain in power. He said, “It is a symbol of the economic reforms taking place in India, and it shows that people believe that the country is moving in the right direction.”
