2020 Delhi Riots: Mohit Kumar’s marriage ceremony was held on February 14 in Moonga Nagar adjacent to Chand Bagh in North East Delhi and people from the Muslim community living nearby not only participated in good numbers but also helped in the work. There is a distance of about four kilometers between Jaffrabad and Chand Bagh and both these areas fall in North East Delhi, where after the horrific riots four years ago, a gap of distrust had formed between the two communities. Both the incidents show that this gap is gradually closing and the distance between the hearts between the two communities is also decreasing.
Residents here say that after the riots, people of both the communities had stopped visiting each other’s neighborhoods and streets, but now people are not only working in each other’s neighborhoods, but also in happiness and sorrow. Are participating.

Jagdish Chauhan, convenor of Yamunapar RWA and resident of Saboli area of the region, said, “It is true that after the riots, people of both the communities had stopped visiting each other’s localities and streets because there was fear in both. , but now there is nothing like that. People now come and go from each other’s areas without any fear. “Shops and street vendors of both the communities are being set up in the markets also.”
How did the riots break out?
On 23 February 2020, there was a clash in Maujpur area between supporters and opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the north-eastern part of Delhi. The next day, on 24 February 2020, these clashes took the form of communal riots and the orgy of violence continued till the evening of 26 February 2020.
53 people including a policeman were killed in the violence while more than 700 people were injured. Apart from this, the rioters had set fire to houses, shops and vehicles and looted on a large scale. After this, the situation was brought under control by deploying a large number of security personnel.
Muslim neighbors helped in Mohit’s marriage.
Mohit Kumar, who lives in an area with mixed population, said that on February 14, people living nearby attended his wedding, including Muslims. According to him, his Muslim neighbors not only participated in the wedding ceremony but also helped him in his work.
Nazim Ali, who attended Mohit’s wedding, says, “I had attended his father’s wedding and have also attended Mohit’s wedding. Mohit’s father and I are childhood friends. There is nothing like bitterness in the hearts after the riots and people of both the communities keep visiting each other.”

Maulana Dawood Amini, member of the Brotherhood Committee of Police and Imam of Mosque and Madrasa Babul Uloom in Jaffrabad, recalls that time and says that February 2020 was a very difficult time, the situation was very bad, both the communities had to suffer huge losses and People of both the communities were afraid of each other.
He said that people used to avoid leaving each other’s neighborhoods, used to shy away from visiting each other’s streets and working in each other’s neighborhoods, but now it is not so and people are living together and unlike earlier. Used to work, are working there also.
Maulana Amini said, “Hindus and Muslims also contribute to each other’s festivals and celebrations. Just as Muslims help in the Kavad Yatra, similarly our non-Muslim brothers help on Friday prayers, Alvida and Eid.”
Describing the efforts made to improve the atmosphere after the riots, he said, “Many goodwill conferences have been held in the area, in which eminent people from both the societies have participated. It is the effort of the people of both the communities to ensure that the incidents of February 2020 do not happen again.”

He said, “Recently Ram Utsav was also celebrated by both the communities together and burst crackers together.” Media reports quoting Delhi Police have said that more than 2600 people from both communities were arrested in cases related to communal violence, out of which about 2100 accused are on bail while about 170 are still in jail.
The police had registered a total of 758 FIRs. Senior lawyer Mahmood Pracha said that Delhi Police has told how many people it has arrested and how many FIRs it has registered, but till date the police has not given information as to how many people from which community it has arrested.
