Regulatory Standard for Basmati Rice: Indian basmati rice is dominant all over the world. In the year 2022-23, the export of basmati rice has been recorded at 24.97 lakh tonnes. There is a huge demand for Indian basmati rice in America, Europe and seven Arab countries as well. This is the reason that in the last few years, India has not only emerged as a big producer of rice, but also a big exporter. Basmati rice is exported all over the world only after meeting the international market standards, but even today many traders and rice companies in the country are filling their pockets by selling fake Basmati rice in opposite standards.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India i.e. FSSAI has now tightened the reins on such illegal activities. Explain that FSSAI has set special rules for the quality and standard of Basmati rice, which rice companies will have to follow. These rules will come into force across the country from 1 August 2023.
Now only natural Basmati will be sold
Let us tell you that the real Basmati is the one which has natural aroma, but today many companies are preparing Basmati rice with artificial colour, fake polish and extraneous smell and selling it across the country. Keeping a check on such companies, the Food Safety and Standard (Food Product Standard and Food Additive) First Amendment Regulation 2023 has been notified in the budget of the Government of India.
In this, special standards have been set for Basmati rice, so that awareness can be increased about the identity, aroma, color and texture of real Basmati. Brown Basmati, Milled Basmati, Parboiled Brown Basmati and Milled Parboiled Basmati rice have been added prominently in the new rules.
what would be called real basmati rice
As per the regulatory standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India i.e. FSSAI, genuine basmati rice will be the one which will have natural aroma. Any kind of artificial polish, fragrance or color will not be tolerated in Basmati rice.
Rice companies will also have to determine the size of basmati rice before and after cooking. Not only this, rice companies will have to give complete information about the amount of moisture in Basmati rice, the amount of amylose, uric acid as well as the presence and quantity of pieces in Basmati rice.
The rules will come into effect from August 1
The regulatory standards set for Basmati rice by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India will come into effect from 1 August 2023. The main purpose of these rules is to prevent adulteration in basmati rice and to protect the interests of the customers, because premium basmati rice with natural aroma is sold very expensive in the market, which is completely dependent on its production cost.
From growing Basmati rice to its care, harvesting, processing and storage, special care is taken so that aromatic long grain natural rice can be safely delivered to the customers.
