Ganga Sagar Fair is also called Ganga Sagar Snan or Ganga Sagar Yatra. It is an annual religious festival held in Sagar Island in the state of West Bengal.
There is a gathering of Hindu pilgrims in Ganga Sagar Snan. People take bath in river Ganga. During this time devotees arrive from every corner of the country. Ganga Sagar Fair is held on the banks of Hooghly River, which flows into the Bay of Bengal.
Regarding bathing in Ganga Sagar, it is said that all the pilgrims take bath in Ganga Sagar again and again. It is believed that by bathing in Ganga Sagar, one gets virtuous results like 100 Adhvedha Yagya.
Ganga Snan Mela is celebrated like a religious festival. There is importance in bathing in Ganga, worshiping Lord Sun and donating lamps. Ganga Sagar Mela is the second major fair of India after Kumbh Mela, which is a proof of its vibrant cultural and spiritual importance.
Ganga Sagar Fair starts a few days before Mankar Sankranti and ends after Makar Sankranti. Ganga Sagar bath will be taken on the day of Makar Sankranti in 2025. However, it will start from January 10, 2025 and will end on January 18.
There is a religious belief regarding bathing in Ganga Sagar that it destroys sins and attains virtue. One gets salvation by taking bath in Ganga on Makar Sankranti. After bathing, devotees offer Arghya to the Sun God.
