People who commit bad deeds in their life have to cross this river. But those who do good deeds and donate cows in life, such souls cross this river easily.

It is mentioned in Garuda Purana that, when the messengers of Yamraj reach near the river with the sinful souls, the river starts roaring and the blood present in the river gets hot and starts boiling. There are bones, pus, crocodiles, thunderbolts, vultures etc. in this river, seeing which the soul gets scared.
If you donate a cow, you get a boat to cross the river.
It is told in Garuda Purana that, people who or whose relatives donate a cow in their life, get a boat to cross this river. Such souls easily cross this dreadful river by sitting in a boat and reach Yamalok. That is why cow donation is mentioned in Hindu scriptures.
